Hire an Attorney for the Best Defense Against Criminal Cases

Having a criminal record can block new employment opportunities and spending time incarcerated can waste years of precious life. If you or a loved one was accused of committing any crime, you need to hire an experienced criminal defense attorney from a reputable firm such as the Law Office of Laura Golub, for the best defense against criminal charges in Illinois. Hiring legal representation will help protect you and shows prosecutors that you mean business! Below are five examples of common criminal cases in Illinois.

5 Examples of Criminal Cases in Illinois

Theft (720 ILCS 5/16-1)

A person commits theft when they knowingly obtain or exert unauthorized control over property of the owner with the intent of depriving the owner permanently of the use or benefit of said property. Theft sentences range from a Class A misdemeanor with theft of property not from the person and not exceeding $500 to a Class X felony with theft of property exceeding $1,000,000 in value.

Assault (720 ILCS 5/12-1)

A person commits an assault when, without lawful authority, they knowingly engage in conduct which places another in reasonable apprehension of receiving a battery. This is an implied threat of, or an incomplete, battery. Assault is a Class C misdemeanor.

Battery (720 ILCS 5/12-3)

A person commits battery if they knowingly without legal justification by any means (1) causes bodily harm to an individual or (2) makes physical contact of an insulting or provoking nature with an individual. Although battery is a Class A misdemeanor, aggravated battery is a Class 3 felony unless the state prosecutor can elevate the charge. A Class 3 felony may result in a term of imprisonment for two to five years.

Illegal Cannabis Possession (720 ILCS 550/4)

It is unlawful in Illinois for any person knowingly to possess cannabis illegally. Any person with (not more than) 10 grams of any substance containing cannabis is guilty of a civil law violation punishable by a minimum fine of $100 and a maximum fine of $200. More than 10 grams but not more than 30 grams of any substance containing cannabis is guilty of a Class B misdemeanor. The severity of criminal charges correlates with the amount in possession, with more than 5,000 grams of any substance containing cannabis being guilty of a Class 1 felony.

Involuntary Manslaughter (720 ILCS 5/9-3)

An example of involuntary manslaughter would be unintentionally killing a motorist in a drunk driving accident. Involuntary manslaughter is a Class 3 felony in Illinois. If sentenced to imprisonment, a term could be between 3 years and 14 years without a criminal defense attorney’s legal aid.
